The Hon'ble Prime Minister on the Independence Day (15th August,2001) announced a new scheme for the benefit of slum dwellers called Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY). This scheme is primarily aimed at ameliorating  the housing problems for slum dwellers living below the poverty line in different towns and cities all over the Country.

Under this scheme, the funds will be available for C/o dwelling units and up gradation of existing units. There is also a component for catering to the basic amenities such a Sanitation and Water Supply.

This component has been named  "Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan"  and is aimed at providing Community Toilet Complexes to be maintained on Community Based Organisation (CBO) of Slum Dwellers themselves.

"VAMBAY"  is a new Centrally Sponsored Scheme shared on a 50:50 between Central and State Governments to be matched by an equal amount of long term loan from  "HUDCO" to be availed against usual State Government Guarantee.

For implementing the "VAMBAY" the State Government  has provided its share of Rs. 26.00 lacs on 13th March,2002.
